As Marvel fans flock to the movie theaters to see the highly anticipated debut of Black Widow, they simply can’t get enough of Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff.
The standalone film is heavily praised for its noteworthy performances by the cast, and the jaw-dropping action sequences. With an 80 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the Marvel film is doing relatively well among critics.
However, this may be the last time fans get to see Johansson play the highly skilled assassin.
Though rumors are swirling that the star is expecting her first child with her new husband, SNL's Colin Jost, that's apparently not the reason for her departure. In a new interview with Fatherly, the 36-year old actress announced that she has “no plans” to return to the role of Black Widow in a future installment.
"I feel really satisfied with this film," she said. "It feels like a great way to go out for this chapter of my Marvel identity."
While Johansson is saying goodbye to her character for good, she would be open to the possibility of returning to the MCU in the future.
“I would love to be able to continue to collaborate with Marvel in other ways, because I think there’s just an incredible wealth of stories there,” she continued. “Re-imagining this genre is something that I find very interesting. I think there’s a lot of opportunities to tell these stories in different ways than audiences have come to expect.”
Johansson was first introduced to the Marvel Universe in Iron Man 2 (2010). She went on to become a prominent member of The Avengers and starred in a number of MCU film installments.
Her final performance in Avengers: Endgame shows Natasha sacrificing herself for Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) to retrieve the last infinity stone - the Soul Stone - to stop Thanos (Josh Brolin) from eradicating half the earth’s population.
Johansson went on to say in the interview that making Black Widow was an unforgettable experience, and finally taking on the lead role in her first standalone film was “absolutely fulfilling.”
“The process of making Black Widow was very different,” she said. “It’s the first film that I’ve produced, and my experience, really from conception to what you guys are all seeing now — was absolutely fulfilling and creatively fulfilling, and also personally, really just very fulfilling.”
Black Widow is available to watch Disney+ Premier Access and in theaters now.
