Early Life
Originally of Ukrainian descent, Katheryn Winnick (born Katerena Anna Vinitska) was born in Ontario, Canada and did not learn English until she was 8 years old. Very passionate about martial arts, she earned her first black belt by age 13.
By age 21, she was teaching Taekwondo at her own school and it was there where she was inspired to enter the film industry by teaching actors to fight on movie sets.
Despite owning and teaching at three different Taekwondo schools, Winnick was still able to complete her degree in Kinesiology at York University in Toronto.
Film Career
Beginning in 2013, Winnick played Lagertha (and Directed) in the award winning hit TV show ‘Vikings’ which aired for 6 seasons and 76 episodes over the span of almost 10 years! The History Channel had initially meant the show to be a miniseries, but decided to expand the show from 10 episodes per season to almost 20 due to its popularity which became quite taxing on the showrunner.
