Jamie Spears has been avoiding a defamation over his daughter’s controversial conservatorship. But a judge has finally ruled that the famous father will address a variety of questions under oath during a deposition.
According to Page Six, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Brenda Perry ruled that Jamie must sit for a deposition to aid in the investigation into his as conservator of his daughter’s estate. The judge noted he’d been served properly and has scheduled his deposition for August 12th.
Earlier this year, Britney’s legal team scrutinized Jamie for allegedly avoiding the deposition.
Her lawyer Matthew Rosengart made a filing in hopes of having a judge order Jamie to be deposed. The attorney claimed that Britney’s dad was “running and hiding […] [and] stonewalling.”
“ Despite his demonstrably false claims that he has ‘nothing to hide’ and would therefore ‘hide nothing,’ James P. Spears has been running and hiding from his deposition and accounting for his misconduct — under oath — as required by law,” the filing said.
So far, Jamie hasn’t publicly responded to the judge’s decision to grant the motion. However, his legal team is similarly trying to make Britney sit down for a deposition.
Last month, it was reported that Britney plans to spill details of her conservatorship in an upcoming memoir, which is worrying her father. In February, it was confirmed Britney signed a $15 million deal with Simon & Schuster to publish her memoir.
Jamie claims his daughter has made a series of untrue allegations about the conservatorship on social media, which he wants to address on the stand before the book is published. A judge has yet to rule on whether Britney will also need to sit for a deposition.
Britney’s relationship with her family has been strained since her decade-long conservatorship was ended last year, which she’s described as “abusive.”
For example, the pop star opted not to invite her parents or siblings to her marriage to Sam Asghari last month. She previously claimed her conservatorship was preventing her from getting married as well as removing her IUD to get pregnant.
“My dad and anyone involved in this conservatorship and my management who played a key role in punishing me — they should be in jail,” Britney testified in court last year. She added, “I would honestly like to sue my family, to be totally honest with you.”
Britney’s family has been accused of various wrongdoing during the conservatorship. In May, her lawyer claimed that Jamie paid himself $6.3 million from his daughter’s estate in addition to giving tens of millions on others involved in the conservatorship.
